Abstract
945,258. Tunnel linings. M. J. GLEESON. July 18, 1961 [Aug. 4, 1960], No. 27124/60. Heading E1F. In a concrete arch segment having prestressing wires 10 extending between anchor plates 7, 8 at or adjacent the ends of the segment, and reinforcing means 9A resisting forces transverse to the segment, the wires 10 are not bonded to the concrete. Segments 1, 2 (Fig 5) abut at the anchor plates 8 which have interengaging projections 19 and sockets 18. The wires 10 are enclosed in rubber or plastics 15, and have their ends fixed to the anchor plates by collets. Each segment may have rubber joints intermediate its end, and rubber may be inserted between adjacent segments. The segments are of I section but in modifications the segments are each formed by two segments of channel section arranged as an I or box section. The arches may be packed at the crowns and shoulders, may retain concrete lagging between the projections, or may support a complete lining. Figs. 7, 8 show a composite arch formed by eight segments held together by bolts passing through holes 32. The interior and top of the arch is lined with steel plates 33, 36. The top of the arch is packed with rubble and old timber 41, and the sides are packed with concrete 42 attached to the arch by bolts 51, 52, 53. Two spaced composite arches may support concrete lagging.
