Liquid containing solids in suspension issues under pressure from the peripheral outlet 4 of a rotary pump 1 having an axial inlet 3 and is directed along the concave surface of a spiral screening deck 5 at least partly surrounding the pump and which has interwoven with it an imperforate plate 6 which forms a space 8 having closed sides and an open end 9 through which coarse separated solids are discharged ; the space formed between the convex surface of the deck 5 and the concave surface of the plate 6 being divided by axial partitions 12 to form open-sided compartments into and from which liquid containing fine solids enter and are discharged. As shown, the deck 5 comprises spaced bars extending axially but in a modification the screen comprises a perforated plate as disclosed in Specification 791,857.
