Solid material containing finely-divided particles is introduced at 1 and agitated in the presence of baffles 6 by an impeller 3. Finer particles and some liquid pass through vibrating screens 10 into collectors 12, while coarser particles are washed in a conical extension 7 by pressure-water introduced tangentially at 8, and are discharged through a valve 9. In the method of the invention several screens, increasing in fineness in the direction of flow of the mixture, may be used.
