Abstract

893,764. Centrifugal separators. McCLURE, C. A. April 16, 1959 [May 1, 1958], No. 13049/59. Class 23. A hydrocyclone used for classification or separation has means whereby a compressible fluid core may be maintained at the centre of the vortex by supplying fluid between the ends of the vortex. In the conical hydrocyclone shown air is supplied to the core by slots 65 in an adjustable tube 61 which may be fed from one or both ends. The tube may have a conical enlargement adjacent the outlet tube 35 so that axial movement of the tube alters the cross sectional area of the annular outlet 59. The air may be pumped or sucked into the core. An outlet port is provided in the top dome 31, the latter being divided from the rest of the separator by a plate 42 carrying the vortex finder 54. The inlet port 75 enters below plate 42. An obstructing member can be lowered into the underflow orifice 59. This enables the cross section of the underflow to be varied and thus the consistency of the slurry emerging at 59 is modified. A plain cylindrical form of separator is also described.
