Abstract
Solutions of alkali metal or ammonium sulphites and/or bisulphites are prepared by reacting a finely-dispersed alkaline solution of alkali metal or ammonium hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates singly or in admixture with or without alkali metal or ammonium sulphites, with a co-current stream of sulphur dioxide containing gas moving at 1-120 m./sec. for a maximum of 10 sec. and thereafter separating the solution from the gas stream. The alkaline solution may be dispersed in a Venturi tube or axially into a fan. The concentration of the initial solutions is such that no deposition of solids occurs during the reaction. All examples refer to sodium sulphite and bisulphite.
