944,798. Towed aerial targets. DORNIERWERKE G.m.b.H. Oct. 15, 1962 [Oct. 21, 1961], No. 38872/62. Heading B7W. An aerial target 3 is towed by an unmanned aircraft 1 by a short cable 2, the aircraft containing instruments 5, 5<SP>1</SP> for observing simultaneously the target 3 and a weapon 9 aimed at the target. The aircraft 1 may be powered and remotely controlled, or may itself be towed on a long cable from a manned aircraft. The target 3 contains a device 4 such as a radar reflector or infra-red emitter, so that the weapon 9 is guided or homes on to the target rather than the aircraft. The instruments 5 may be film or television cameras providing a stereoscopic record, and the aircraft may transmit or store the data obtained. In this way, the performance of the weapon and its flight path in the vicinity of the target may be observed by narrow angle instruments observing from a comparatively short range, with little danger to the instruments or data stores. The instruments 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are remotely stopped and started by commands from an attacking aircraft, the ground, or the weapon.
