[Also in Divisions E1 and F4] A method of forming one or more fissures in a decorative tile containing a substantial quantity of fragile synthetic mineral fibres comprises the steps of mechanically pushing the body of the tile inwards from one face thereof over one or more areas to a depth which is less than the thickness of the tile body thereby to break the synthetic fibres over the area or areas to the depth to which the tile body is penetrated; and removing the resulting debris from the tile face in which the fissure or fissures is formed. A die 10 for forming the fissures comprises relief portions 13, 15 and a number of pins 19, the latter forming soundabsorbing holes in the tile. A tile 25 to be embossed is placed below a stripper plate 17 on a base 26 and the die 10 is then pressed down into contact with the tile, the chief portions of the die and the pins 19 passing through correspondingly shaped apertures 13<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>1</SP>, 191 in the stripper plate 17, until side portions of the die abut against adjustable stops 29 mounted in the base 26. The plate 17 is mounted on spacer blocks 29<SP>1</SP> which are replaceable by blocks of a different size so as to accommodate different sized tiles. The relief portions 13, 15 of the die have substantially vertical side walls 18. The degree of penetration of the die into the tile can be regulated by adjustment of the stops 29. After being embossed by the die 10 the tile 25 is placed on a conveyer 30 and passes under an embossing roller 31 having projections 32 which make small indentations in the surface of the tile. The projections 32 may be nails driven into the roller and having had their heads cut off or grit or rock particles glued to the roller. Thereafter the tile passes beneath a suction hood 33 (see Division F4) where the debris caused by the embossing operations is removed and then beneath a spray station 40 and a coating roller 43 where coating composition is respectively sprayed into the fissures and applied to the flat surface of the tile.
