Abstract
1459575 Making composite panels TRAMEX SA 17 Dec 1974 [17 May 1974] 54362/74 Heading B2E Composite panels for use as building walls and partitions are made by continuously casting onto an endless band a mixture of an ultimately strong and rigid material, such as concrete or plaster, with pellets of resilient cellular material such as expanded polystyrene to form a first layer, allowing this layer to set forming a superficial cellular structure having open cells in the top face of this layer, continuously casting onto this face a second layer, particularly of plaster, to form an appearance lining and after setting of this second layer, cutting the composite panels to length. A lower layer of appearance lining may be cast initially on the endless band and the said layer or after application thereto of a bond-promoting resin. Alternatively, a rough surface may be provided on the lower layer by scratching or scoring or by sprinkling thereon of dry plaster or sand, or a non-woven falbric may be placed on the top face of this layer. A protective plastics strip which has been relief-printed or embossed may be paid out onto the endless band prior to casting to protect the outer surface of the composite panel and to impart a raised decoration thereto on removal. Acrylic resin (as hardener) and cut glass fibres may be incorporated in both the lower and first layers. The first layer may be cast as a wide central band between two side bands which contain fewer polystyrene pellets than the material of the central stand Boxes or scoops may be used to level the layers and excess material is recycled. The superficial cellular structure is formed either by scraping with a knife blade followed by blowing with compressed air or gas to remove the exposed pellets or, when polystyrene pellets are used, by a sublimation technique either by heating to 80C or by spreading or spraying of a resin which causes the sublimation of expanded polystyrene. Apparatus for making the panels comprises an endless belt 1 of stainless steel, two endless side bands 5 (Fig. 6) arranged vertically on either side of the horizontal belt, first and second casting devices B and C for forming said first and second layers, the second device being located far enough from the first to allow setting of the cast first layer, optionally a third casting device A for forming the lower appearance lining, means located directly before the second casting device for forming the superficial cellular structure and comprising a blade 40 and blowing means 43, optionally a Hertzian microwave furnace 50, and cutting means 51 comprising an abrasive thread or wire, a saw or a laser beam.
