944,705. Homogenising devices. UNILEVER Ltd. July 17, 1961 [July 26, 1960], No. 25907/60. Heading A2B. In a homogenising device partially crystallized margarine, e.g. produced by rapid chilling and emulsification, is fed through inlet conduit 6 into a perforated cylinder 8 and by means of abutments 14, 13, 12 and annular baffles 11, 10, 9 is caused to follow a smooth path passing alternately from out of the cylinder 8 into an annular passage formed by a surrounding coaxially disposed outer tube 1 and back into the cylinder before discharge through a conduit 7. Associated and preferably integrated with abutments 14, 13, 12 are conical end members 17, 18 and curved intermediate solid members 15, 16 all these parts together forming a coaxially located central guide means for the margarine within the cylinder 8. The perforations, e.g. round holes, in the zone of cylinder 8 between flange 3 and abutment 14 are larger than the perforations, e.g. round holes, in the zone delineated by abutments 14, 11 but smaller than the perforations, e.g. slits, in each of the remaining zones between abutments 11, 13, 10, 12 and 9. The number of perforations in each of the zones is preferably such that the total area of perforations in each zone is larger than the area of the inlet port 22 to the cylinder 8.
