Abstract
944,284. Knitting-machines. DERBY & MIDLAND WARP KNITTING CO. Ltd., and J. MORRIS. Sept. 20,1961 [July 12, 1960], No.24250/60. Heading D1C. To restrain a newly knitted piece from bowing transversely as it leaves a knitting machine endless carriers are provided, each supporting elements adapted to engage the edges of the piece as it passes to withdrawal mechanism, the spacing of the carriers being adjustable to suit the width of the piece to be knitted. Two guide rods 1, 2, and a drive shaft 3 extend transversely of the machine and two plates 4, 5 are mounted on the shafts to be movable therealong, to suit the width of the piece knitted. Each plate carries, on its inner face, a triplex chain 6 extending around duplex pinion 7, 8 carried on the plate and a duplex drive pinion 9 driven by shaft 3. Pairs of clamping plates (Fig. 7, not shown) engage corresponding pairs of the chain rollers, each outer clamping plate being provided with a pair of pins extending therefrom to engage the edges of work leaving the warp knitting machine, the work being urged on to the pins by brushes 31. Idler pin wheels 32 set at an angle are provided on each plate to engage and be rotated by the work to draw the edges towards the chain pins. The work is withdrawn by nip rolls 20, 21 and take off rolls 22 23. Nip roll 20 is geared to take off roll 23 which is driven from a drive shaft, (not shown). This shaft is coupled to shaft 3 by an infinitely variable gear (Fig. 5, not shown). The shaft 3 may carry a further supporting roller. In another, preferred, embodiment the withdrawal gear comprises rubber covered rollers 50, 52 and felt covered rollers, 51, 53. A pinion 54 fast with the drive shaft 3 is chain driven from a drive 58 by means of a variable speed gear and drives roller 53 by a chain 55. Rollers 53, 50 are connected by gears 59, 60 and the other rollers are driven by friction. The drive shaft 3 carries a felt covered support roller 61 journalled thereon.
