Abstract

944,156. Fluid-friction brakes. McCULLOCH CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1961 [Feb. 29, 1960], No. 6112/61. Heading F2E. [Also in Division F1]. A retarder 30 for a motor vehicle comprises a vortex fluid pump (see Division F1) having its impeller driven from the drive shaft 33 of the vehicle either directly as shown or through gearing. A clutch for disconnecting the drive may be provided. The pump outlet ports are connected by diffusers 34 to a common outlet 35 to the atmosphere, a shut-off valve 36 at the outlet 35 being controlled from the driver's cabin through a flexible cable 37. With partial or complete closure of the valve 36 the pump compresses the atmospheric air and thus absorbs power, thereby braking the vehicle. The retarder may be equipped with a vacuum pump and an inlet shut-off valve to minimize energy absorption.
