Abstract

In a vacuum installation for a motor vehicle driven by a Diesel engine comprising a vacuum pump 1 driven by the engine and a duct system, for connection to vacuum- operated units 3, 8, 9, which includes non-return valve and/or throttling devices 4, 10, the said system includes, on the vacuum side of the pump 1, a jet pump 11 which has a non-return valve 16 at its air outlet and is so disposed that, if the vacuum pump produces air under pressure instead of vacuum due to reverse running of the engine, the air under pressure generates, by means of the jet pump, vacuum in the system or in a preferred unit to be operated by vacuum such as a shut-off device for a fuel-injection pump. In another embodiment of the invention, a duct leading to the intake of the jet pump and a duct connected to the vacuum point of that pump are interconnected by a duct provided with a non-return valve. In a further embodiment, the vacuum point of the jet pump is connected to a preferred unit through a throttling device and a part of the duct system leading to other units is connected through a non-return valve to a duct leading to the intake of the jet pump. <IMAGE>
