Abstract

944,075. Inking apparatus. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY Ltd. March 16, 1962 [March 7, 1961], No. 8352/61. Heading B6C. A horizontally reciprocable vibrator roller 1 in an inking train is cooled by the passage of a cooling fluid through its hollow interior, the fluid being distributed throughout the hollow interior by internal baffle means. The hollow body of the roller is loosely packed with aluminium turnings 30, retained in position by a screen 31 and forming a baffle, and is provided with hollow spindles 32. An inlet manifold 15 comprising a passage 25 communicating with holes 20 and 21 is mounted on a spindle 32. A pipe 16 feeds compressed air into the passage 25. The outer end of the spindle 32 is provided with a flanged hollow plug 23 which fits into the hole 20. A ball race 17 allows the spindle 32 to rotate relatively to the manifold B15 and an air seal 18 and a thrust washer 19 are located between the ball race and the plug 23. The hole 21 is closed by a plug 24 and any axial movement of the spindle relative to the manifold causes the flange of the plug 23 to abut the washer 19 thereby moving the manifold with the spindle. The manifold is prevented from rotation by a depending arm 26. The compressed air supplied through the pipe 16 may be exhausted to the atmosphere at the end of the roller remote from the manifold or may be piped away through a manifold similar to the inlet manifold. The inking train shown in Fig. 1 comprises a fountain 3, a fountain roller 4, messenger rollers 5 and 8, a distributer roller 6, a composition roller 9 forming the apex of a pyramid, two cooled vibrator rollers 1 and 2 and rollers 10, 11, 12 and 13 engaging the forme 14. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the manifold is secured to the supporting frame and the spindle moves relatively thereto. In the embodiments of Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the aluminium turnings are replaced by a baffle comprising pipes and ports which ensure that the cooling air is efficiently distributed in and exhausted from the roller 1.
