943,761. Thermionic cathodes. MACHLETT LABORATORIES Inc. Dec. 27, 1961 [Jan. 3, 1961], No. 46310/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1D. A flexible, self-supporting, electron-emissive film comprises a polymethacrylate binder which completely volatilizes when subjected to heat during normal electron tube processing. The film may be prepared by coating a sheet of paper or polyethylene with a mixture of 6% by weight of poly-n-butyl methacrylate, 90% emissive substance, and 4% plasticizer in a solvent, e.g. acetone, amylacetate or ethylacetate. The plasticizer may be sucroseacetate-isobutyrate, dibutyl-phthalate and diethyl-oxalate and the emissive substance 70% nickel powder, 29% emissive carbonates and 1 % zirconium hydride. The binder may be polymethyl methacrylate, polyethyl methacrylate, poly-n-propyl methacrylate, poly-isopropyi methacrylate, poly-iso-butyl methacrylate or poly-n-amyl methacrylate. After drying, the film may be removable from the carrier sheet either before or after application to a cathode base. The emissive film may be 40 microns thick with a density of 1.8 gms./cm.<SP>3</SP>, and may be sealed with a pressure of 10 kgms./ cm.<SP>3</SP>, to a nickel base which is cold or heated to 100‹ C. Alternatively, a bonding solvent, e.g. xylene, methyl-cellosolve-acetate or cyclohexanol, may be used.
