Abstract
A cathode assembly structure for a thermionic emission device in which the cathode is coated with a barium containing emissive material has areas of the cathode essembly structure coated with a layer of zirconium alloy which, in use, decreases spurious electron emission resulting from migration of emissive material to those areas. A cathode assembly structure is described in which the alloy is on a molybdenum base. A mixture of zirconium and nickel (preferred percentages 83:17 to 96:4 by weight) with particle sizes from 2-4 microns is mixed with a volatile organic binder such as nitrocellulose lacquer and a solvent such as amyl acetate to thin the mixture, then sprayed or brushed on the base, then fired for 10 seconds at a temperature within the range of 1500-1700 DEG C. in a vacuum at a pressure not to exceed 5 x 10-5 mm. Hg. to form a coating of zirconium alloy with an interface layer of zirconium-nickel-molybdenum. Other metals may be used instead of nickel and other mixtures given together with their percentage weight combination are: 50:50 zirconium-titanium, 70:30 zirconium-vanadium, 82:18 zirconium - chromium, 77.5:22.5 zirconium-manganese, 69:31 zirconium - molybdenum, 82:18 zirconium-tungsten. It is stated that cobalt may be used instead of nickel but percentages for this mixture are not given.
