Abstract

943,559. Television. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. May 15, 1961 [May 16, 1960], No. 17610/61. Heading H4F. Visual inspection of a metal strip 1 (Fig. 1), moving at high speed through a processing station (to detect flaws &c.) is effected by illuminating the strip momentarily by lamp 5 during the frame retrace period of a television camera 6 which is focused on a selected area of the strip and the image signals derived from which are reproduced as a picture on a viewing tube (not shown). Two lamps 5 (Figs. 2, 3) are preferably employed the light from which is directed against a diffusely reflecting screen 8 provided with a non-reflective area 11 the area under which on the strip is " viewed " by the camera 6 so that when the strip is highly reflecting the only light which reaches the camera is that due to surface imperfection &c. When the strip is not highly reflecting it may be illuminated directly (Fig. 4, not shown). The control circuit for the lamps 5 is conditioned (via the synchronizing signals of the system) so that flashing (of a duration of about 30 microseconds) occurs during frame retrace periods (1) when a manually controlled switch is operated; (2) at periodic intervals controlled by a frame pulse counting circuit; and (3) at spaced positions along the length of the strip controlled by counting pulses generated by a pulse type tachometer operated by the mechanism moving the strip operation in modes (2) or (3) being selectively determined by manual switch means (Fig. 7, not shown).
