Abstract

943,260. Electrophotographic developing processes and apparatus. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 18, 1960 [April 13, 1959], No. 9739/60. Heading G2H. A method of developing an electrostatic image on an insulating or photoconducting surface comprises the steps of applying to said surface a developer mixture which includes electroscopic developer particles dispersed in an insulating carrier liquid, whereby said developer particles are attracted to said electrostatic image, and then applying to said surface an additional quantity of insulating liquid substantially devoid of developer particles in order to remove developer particles adhering to said surface in non-image areas thereof. The photoconducting surface may comprise zinc oxide in a resinous coating on paper, and the developer may comprise coloured particles of a thermoplastic styrene resin dispersed in a silicone liquid such as dimethyl polysiloxane,the colouring being provided by various black pigments and dyestuffs. Apparatus, as shown, for carrying out the above method comprises a transport roller 12 round which the photoconductive paper 10 is fed, a fluted applicator roller 14 dipping into a tank 18 containing developer 20, and a smooth wringer roller 16 just dipping into a part of the liquid in tank 18 which is relatively devoid of developer particles. Tank 18 may have other shapes than as shown.
