Abstract

High molecular weight polyamides are dyed with an aqueous solution of acid dyestuff containing a sulphonic acid group but free of combined heavy metals, using a dyebath containing from 0,1% to 1,0% by weight of phenol or a derivative thereof having one or more alkyl groups, from 1% to 5% by weight of benzyl alcohol, benzyl carbinol, benzoic acid or salicylic acid or a derivative thereof having one or more alkyl groups, and an anionic surface active agent, e.g. Turkey Red Oil. Examples of alkyl derivatives of the above compounds are meta-cresol, ortho-cresol, 3 : 5-xylenol, cresotinic acid, anisyl alcohol and cumyl alcohol. The material dyed may be polyhexamethylene adipamide or poly-epsilon-caprolactam. Examples are given. Specifications 547,844 and 584,758 are referred to.
