The diameter of the needle cylinder of a circular machine is stepped as at 38 to provide a greater diameter at that portion adjacent the cam base 24 as compared with the portion 37 in the region of the needle circle. The needle shanks or sliders BS are likewise stepped to enable the butts 42, 43 formed on the portion of greater depth from front to back to project beyond the portion of greater diameter to be engaged by the cams. Specifications 876, 794 and 910, 773 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
