Abstract

The invention provides, as new materials, foamed solid products comprising thermoset co-condensates of urea and furfuryl alcohol with formaldehyde. They can be obtained by treating a urea-furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde condensate having a pH not less than 7 with a blowing agent and an acid or latent acid hardener for the co-condensate and causing or allowing the co-condensate to foam and to thermoset under the action of the blowing agent and the hardener. Preferred blowing agents are those which generate a gas by reaction with an acid without the application of heat, e.g. sodium carbonate or bicarbonate or calcium carbonate in combination with phosphoric acid. A plasticizer such as a di- or trihydric alcohol can be included in the mixture before the hardening. In examples the co-condensate is prepared by reacting urea and formaldehyde at pH 7.5, then adding urea, furfuryl alcohol and formic acid (to produce pH 6.5), reacting further, cooling, and adjusting the pH to 7. After dehydration finely divided sodium bicarbonate is milled in and foaming is effected by addition of (1) aqueous orthophosphoric acid; (2) wetting agent, polypropylene glycol and aqueous orthophosphoric acid.
