Abstract

942,735. Continuous metal heating furnaces. BLOOM ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Aug. 27, 1962, No. 32836/62. Heading F4B. In a furnace for continuously heating metal slabs, billets &c. having skid rails 20 in the heating zone 12 and a hearth 24 in the cooking zone 13, the hearth is formed with open channels 34 disposed in alignment with the skid rails and forming with the slabs 11 passages for combustion gases supplied by burners 32. A discharge ramp 26 has water-cooled slide bars 27 offset from the channels. A modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), has a water-cooled cross beam supporting the upper band of the slide bars 27 and the channels 34 discharge through the ramp. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the burners are disposed near the top of the ramp discharging into the channels in the opposite direction to the path of the slabs.
