Abstract

942,055. Consuming smoke. M. J. G. STEPPE. June 27, 1960 [June 29, 1959; Jan. 19, 1960], No. 22360/60. Heading F4B. [Also in Division F1] Apparatus for introducing a solution of combustion-assisting catalyst into the combustion air and/or exhaust of a boiler furnace 1 comprises a tank 4 having a filler 3, sight glass 9 and safety valve 10 and pressurized by a compressor 5 powered by an electric motor 7 and delivering filtered air via a perforated pipe 8 to the tank which supplies air and solution feeds 16, 15 of atomizers 14, 13 injecting into the delivery of the furnace blower 2 and the exhaust pipe 11, in the latter ease to a catalytic helical brush 12. A valve 17 regulates the furnace pressure and allows removal of solid precipitations. A pressure-stat 18 controls the motor 7 to maintain constant tank pressure. Electromagnetic or pneumatically - operated valves 19, 20 control the feeds 15, 16 on stoppage of the blower 2, to stop them in the case of a liquid or gaseous furnace fuel or to continue them at reduced rate for a certain time with solid furnace fuel. The catalyst may be in aqueous solution or be dissolved in or emulsified with oil or alcohol, atomization of the solution to at least 15, and preferably 5, microns being effected so that after solvent evaporation the catalyst particles generally have sub-micron dimensions. Suitable catalysts are aluminium, calcium, cerium, cobalt or iron in the form of acetates, sulphates, chlorides, nitrates, bichromates, oxychlorides, phosphates, acetonates and organic acid derivatives.
