Abstract

1191464 Gas turbine plant; treating charge R MAINGEOT 15 May 1967 [16 May 1966] 22445/67 Headings C5G G10A and G11 [ Also in Divisions C4 and F4] Apparatus for introducing a combustion assisting catalyst into the charge or exhaust of an I.C. engine, gas turbine, or jet engine comprises a tank 1, Fig. 1, in which the catalyst is stored as a dispersion of particles of a size less than 1Á in a pressurized, readily gasifiable liquid, from which the liquid is fed to an expansion nozzle 11 wherein the liquid vaporizes, forming a gaseous carrier for the catalyst particles which is fed to the intake or exhaust system. In Fig. 1 the pressurized liquid flows to the nozzle. 11 under the control of an electromagnetic valve 9 and an over-riding manual control 10. The nozzle 11, having air inlet orifices 12, discharges adjacent the intake end 18 of the intake system 15. An electric heater 19 is provided to vaporize the liquid under cold conditions and a valve 20 may be provided to ensure constant vaporization pressure. In Fig. 2 the nozzle 11 is connected to a pipe 23 discharging the catalyst at points 24 immediately adjacent the exhaust valves of an I.C. engine whereby some of the catalyst is sucked back into the cylinders near the end of the exhaust period. The catalyst may be aluminium, barium, calcium, cerium, cobalt, iron, manganese, magnesium, lead, phosphorus and their salts. The pressurized liquid may be a hydrocarbon such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, octane, ethylene, propylene, dimethyl ether or ethylene oxide or liquefied gas such as ammonia, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide or hydrazine. Preferably, the catalyst is manganese methyl cyclopentadieryl tricarbonyl dispersed in methyl oxide with a smaller quantity of 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane.
