Abstract
Sintered alloys such as stainless and alloy steels are formed by sintering a loose, uncompacted powder mixture comprising at least 20% of a ferrous alloy which contains at least 50% sigm<\>ga phase, and a metal which alloys with the sigm<\>ga phase during sintering so that the sintered alloy is free of sigm<\>ga and the pone volume is a maximum of 10% of the sintered volume. The metals which alloy with the sigm<\>ga phase are Fe, Co, Ni and Cu and the sigm<\>ga containing ferrous alloys specified are:- 30% Fe - 45% Cr - 20% Ni - 5% Mo ; 26% Fe - 44% Cr - 17% Ni - 10% Mo - 3% Cu ; 38% Fe - 5% Cr - 12% Ni. 35-60% Cr - 5-35% Ni - 2-10% Mo and/or W. - Fe balance. The mixed powders of minus 200 mesh are poured into a ceramic or steel mould and sintered at 1050 DEG -1350 DEG C. in hydrogen or under vacuum. The hydrogen atmosphere may be generated by the decomposition of a hydride. The sintered body is finally hot worked to final density. Specifications 749,472 and 800,343 are referred to.
