941,366. Golf clubs. J. JOHNSTONE. Nov. 22, 1960 [July 22, 1960], No. 40153/60. Heading A6D. In a set of golf clubs having head portions 21 of successively increasing loft angles, the head portions are constructed such that their respective centres of gravity are spaced progressively further from the toe 26 of the head portion. Thus the centre of gravity 1 of the Number 1 iron is closely adjacent the toe of the head portion, whilst that 9 of the Number 9 iron is adjacent the heel 27 of the head portion, the centres of gravity of the intermediate clubs in the series being spaced between these two points. In one embodiment of the invention, the club heads are formed with a thickened portion 28, the end 31 of the thickened portion being widest on the number 9 club and narrowest on the Number 1 club, and the end 32 of the thickened portion being narrowest on the Number 9 club and widest on the Number 1 club. Alternatively, an additional piece of material may be added to the rear face of each club and located to bring the centre of gravity into the required position, or material may be removed from the rear face of each club head by means of shallow drillings therein, such that the material remaining is so distributed that the centre of gravity occupies the required position.
