In a hand device for comminuting foodstuffs at least one of a plurality of disc cutters 2 on a cutting cylinder 1 is provided with notches 2a distributed over its periphery which serve to hold down the food being cut. All or alternate disc cutters may be notched and the notches may be staggered in respect of their angular positions The notches may also extend over angular zones of from 10 degrees to 90 degrees and be so close together as to provide a serrated, sawtooth-like edge to the cutter disc in these zones (Fig. 2 not shown). The cutters may be steel discs fused into the preferably thermoplastic cylinder 1 which is provided with a central hollow shaft to receive a detachable spindle 6 passing through reinforcements 5 in the sides 4 of a casing 3 and locked in position as shown. A stripper plate 12 is provided to prevent the disc cutters from becoming clogged.
