[Also in Division B2] A disc mill for wet milling for starch removal in which the fibre and corn fragments are exposed or freed for subsequent removal of the starch by washing comprises a pair of rotatable discs 28, 29 rotated in opposite directions in face-toface relation, means 27 to supply material into a central zone 32 between the discs, and radially-spaced formations on the faces of the discs for the purpose of accelerating the radial motion of the material, circumferentially distributing it and providing a surface against which the material so accelerated and distributed is impacted. The discs are driven in opposite directions by motor units 19, 21 and are encased by a housing 22 which has an inlet hopper 27 and an outlet passage 24. The slurry is fed into the hopper 27 and through passages 31 in the disc 28 into the space 32 between the discs, whereupon a vaned structure 33 on the face of the disc 29 urges the slurry radially outwards for discharge at the periphery into the housing 22 and outlet 24. The slurry on its passage outwards under centrifugal action is acted upon by teeth 38, 39, 44, 42 which are arranged oppositely-disposed on segmental plates 36, 37 on the discs; the teeth 44 form a circular set on the plates 36 of the disc 28 working in interfitting relation with the teeth 39, 42 on the plates 37 of the other discs. The teeth 38 on the plate 37 are formed as circumferentially-spaced projections and help to accelerate the slurry on to the rounded inner edges of the teeth 39 which serve to distribute the material circumferentially and admit it to the tapering passages 41 between them. Here the material is further accelerated and expelled thereupon into the path of the counter-rotating teeth 44. These act like the teeth 39 so that the material is forcibly expelled through the tapering passages 45 between these teeth and is impacted against the teeth 42 of the plate 37 for discharge through the tapering passages 43 between the teeth.
