Abstract

1,133,330. Disc refiners. BAUER BROS. CO. 14 Oct., 1966 [14 Oct., 1965], No. 46008/66. Heading B2A. A disc refiner 23, Fig. 1, includes two contra-rotating discs 42, 43 enclosed by a sealed casing 22, so that pulp may be worked by the discs under selected pressure conditions. the discs being secured to separate motordriven shafts 26, 27 rotatable in the casing 22 which, comprises parts 53, 54 bolted at 64 and readily retractible to provide access to the discs. In operation, material, e.g. chips or stock, is supplied by a conveyor 10, Fig. 3, via a rotary valve 11 to a steam-pressurised digester 12 and thence to the refiner, whose discs are adjustably-spaced apart by movement of the shaft 27. Wipers 50 on the disc 43 propel material to an outlet 51 and it leaves the system via a further valve (29), Fig. 4 (not shown). The system may be operated at pressures of 100 to 150 p.s.i. and temperatures from 320‹ to 340‹F with disc spacings of .04 to .10 inch. In a second embodiment the junction between the two parts (82, 83) Fig 2 (not shown) is angled to permit the inlet and outlet to be integral with one (82) of the parts and easy access to the discs (74, 75).
