Class 59 In a mill of the kind having relatively rotatable discs 1, 2 fitted with concentric rows of grinding studs 3, the rows of studs on one disc being enterposed between the rows of studs on the other disc, the discs define between them a grinding chamber of shallow generally truncated conical shape the apex of which is disposed adjacent to the inlet for the material to be ground, each of the discs being formed with a series of steps 4, 5 and the transition surfaces between the steps on the upper disc 2 being conical and sloping towards the delivery end of the grinding chamber to form abutments or baffles for deflecting the material to be ground towards the centre of the grinding chamber. The studs are secured in recesses 6 in the grinding discs by means of bolts 7. The disc 1 is rotatable and the disc 2 either stationary or rotatable in the opposite direction to the disc 1. The material to be ground is fed from a hopper 15 through a slot defined by an adjustable belllike member 13. The disc 1 is provided with a portion 12 which is shaped to the flow path of the material. The discs are surrounded by a casing 8 which forms a delivery chamber 9 and is provided with a tangential outlet. Vanes 11 secured to the disc 1 remove any material adhering to the. chamber 9. Heating or cooling chambers 16, 17 are provided The delivery chamber merges axially downwards into a further chamber which may be funnel-shaped. The discs may rotate about a horizontal axis. The mill is driven by means of one or more pairs of spur gears from a motor which may be disposed above or below the mill according as the mill is to be used for dry or wet grinding.
