Abstract

940,572. Fuelling reactors. SOC. INDATOM. March 25, 1960 [March 27, 1959], No. 10645/60. Heading G6C. In a refuelling arrangement in which the fuel elements 7 are arranged in channels 6 in a core 5, the coolant gas passing upwardly through the channels, means are provided to prevent the fuel elements being blown out of a channel when that channel is being unloaded. The said means comprise firstly a number of apertures 15 provided in a movable loading tube 10 which is introduced into a standpipe 3 from a loading machine 12, the apertures permitting escape of the coolant gas in the channel being unloaded into the interior of the pressure vessel 1; secondly, the said means comprise a thermocouple or flowmeter 17 mounted at the lower end of the tube 10 and producing an electric signal representative of the coolant flow in the channel 6, this signal being fed to a transducer to control a valve 19 (Fig. 2, not shown) whereby a variable counter-flow of coolant is introduced at the upper end of the tube 10 and the resultant gas pressure acting on the fuel elements 7 is maintained at a value such that they are not blown out.
