Abstract
1,225,360. Fuelling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 15 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 4348/68. Heading G6C. A standpipe 13 of a gas-cooled reactor has its cylindrical body 18 extending upwardly from the inner surface of the concrete pressure vessel 11 to a fuelling machine (not shown) connectible to an upper extension 21 of the standpipe. A charge tube 30, aligned with the standpipe, extends through a coolant outlet plenum 37 formed between the pressure vessel 11 and a concrete diaphragm 12 and is carried by the latter by means not shown. Apertures 35 in the charge tube 30 permit coolant to flow from the corresponding fuel element channel in the reactor core into the plenum 37. When fuelling a channel it is necessary to reduce the coolant flow and this is achieved by an inner sleeve 14 rotatably supported by bearings 25, 27 in the standpipe body 18, the sleeve extending into the charge tube 30 and having elongated apertures 36 which may be aligned with the apertures 35. An annular gear 17 on the sleeve 14 enables it to be rotated by a shaft 16 through a pinion 15 and thus control the coolant flow.
