Abstract

Textile fabrics consisting of or containing yarns of aromatic polyester are discharge printed by a process in which the fabric is dyed or mechanically impregnated with a dischargeable dyestuff and is printed with a composition containing a reducing agent, a polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of 15,000 to 20,000 and, if desired, a vat dyestuff, the so treated fabric is then dried and heated in the dry state at 190 DEG -220 DEG C. for 20 seconds to 2 minutes. The polyethylene glycol may have a linear or branched chain structure and it may be crosslinked. Suitable reducing agents are salts of sulphoxylic acid, their aldehyde and ketone condensates, formamidine sulphinic acid and its salts. The preferred reducing agents are zinc, aluminium and aliphatic amine salts of formamidine sulphinic acid especially when such a salt is prepared in situ with less than an equivalent amount of a metal oxide or salt, e.g. zinc oxide or acetate. The discharge printing paste may be applied to the fabric before or after the impregnation with dischargeable dyestuff. Examples of white and coloured discharge printing on fabrics of polyethyleneterephthalate yarn are given.
