Abstract

Copolymers of butadiene-1,3 and a linear internal mono-olefin containing from five to thirty-five carbon atoms are made by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the presence of an Alfin catalyst. Internal monoolefins are defined as those in which the single double bond is not between the first and second carbon atoms. The Alfin catalyst preferably consists of a mixture of sodium chloride, a sodium alkenyl derived from an aliphatic olefin and a sodium alkoxide derived from a methyl alkyl carbinol. The copolymerization may be effected in an inert hydrocarbon solvent. The internal mono-olefin may be pentene-2, heptene-2, heptene-3, octene-2, octene-3, tricosene-11, or pentriacontene-17, and the olefin may be in the cis and/or trans form. The preferred catalyst is a pentane suspension of allyl sodium, sodium isopropoxide, and sodium chloride. The Dilute Solution Viscosity of the copolymers are determined by the formula, <FORM:0939495/IV(a)/1> where t is the flow time of the elastomer in a solvent in an Ostwald Viscosimeter, and t0 is the flow time of the solvent, is between 6 and 20. Specifications 872,163, 924,654 and 939,496 are referred to.
