1439091 Isobutylene copolymers SXAMPROGETTI SpA 11 April 1974 [13 April 1973] 16345/74 Heading C3P Copolymers of isobutylene, an unsubstituted or substituted conjugated diolefin and an unsubstituted or substituted cyclic olefin may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of catalyst, which may comprise (a) R n AlX 3-n where n is an integer or fraction in the range 1-3, X is halogen and R is H or a hydrocarbon radical containing up to 20 carbon atoms, and (b) X<SP>1</SP> q MY m where X<SP>1</SP> is halogen, M is a transition metal of Group IVA, VA, VIA or VIII, q and m are integers, Y is O or a group selected from alkoxy, OCOR<SP>1</SP>, -NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aromatic, aremic and -CH 2 COCH 2 COCH 2 R<SP>1</SP> groups where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are H or hydrocarbyl groups having up to 20 carbon atoms and the valency of metal M is m+q when Y is other than oxygen and 2m+q where Y is oxygen. The products may be vulcanized and covulcanized with high unsaturation rubbers. Polymerization may be effected in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon liquid or carbon disulphide. Many suitable monomers and catalyst components are specified and examples describe the preparation of copolymers of isobutylene and butadiene with (1) cyclopentene, cyclooctadiene-1,5, (3) norbornene-2, (4) 1-methyl cyclooctadiene-1,5, (6) 5-chloromethyl norbornene-2, (7) 5-bromomethyl norbornene-2 and (8) 1-chlorooctadiene-1,5; and of isobutylene and piperylene with (5) norbornene-2.
