Abstract

1279352 Olefin copolymers GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 6 March 1970 [3 April 1969] 10893/70 Heading C3P Polymeric resinous materials comprising 40 to 50 weight per cent of piperylene units, 10 to 35 weight per cent of 2-methylbutene-2 units and 5 to 40 weight per cent of dicyclopentadiene units, and optionally up to 25 weight per cent of units of piperylene dimers and trimers and other C 4-6 unsaturated hydrocarbons, may be prepared by polymerizing mixtures comprising 20 to 60 weight per cent of piperylene, 20 to 60 weight per cent of 2-methylbutene-2 and 5 to 50 weight per cent of dicyclopentadiene optionally with up to 50 weight per cent of other unsaturated hydrocarbons, in the presence of an anhydrous halide catalyst and optionally a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon diluent. Specified other C 4-6 hydrocarbons are 2- methylbutene-1, 2,3-dimethylbutene-1, 2,3-dimethylbutene-2, 3,3-dimethylbutene-1, pentene-1, pentene-2, 2-methylpentene-1, 2-methylpentene - 2, 3 - methylpentene - 2, 4 - methylpentane-1, 4-methylpentene-2, hexene-2, butadiene-1,3, isoprene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene and cyclopentadiene-1,3. Specified catalysts are aluminium chloride, stannic chloride, boron trifluoride, methyl aluminium dichloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride and propyl aluminium dichloride. The resins are suitable as extenders and tackifiers for natural and synthetic rubbers and vinyl aromatic / diene elastomer / vinyl aromatic block copolymers.
