Abstract

939,461. Variable resistors. N.S.F. Ltd. April 1, 1960 [April 29, 1959], No. 14612/59. Class 37. [Also in Groups XXXVII and XXXVIII] A combined variable resistor and switch (see Group XXXVII) for use in a road vehicle lighting system (see Group XXXVIII) comprises a switch of the push-pull type and a variable resistor mounted on the housing of the switch, the wiper arm of the resistor being responsive to rotation of an operating shaft of the switch but not to longitudinal motion thereof. The shaft 15 passes through a bushing 16 into the body 10 of moulded insulating material, a metal pressing 13 closing the bottom of the switch and serving as a mounting cradle therefor. An insulated rotor 28 carrying a wiper arm 30 is rotatable by shaft 15. The wirewound resistor 27, made for example of nickelchrome wire cemented on to a core, is inserted in the front closure member 12 of the body 10. A spring 33 holds the wiper arm in contact with the resistance 27 against longitudinal movement of the shaft 15 during the operation of the switch.
