Class 37 A rotary type potentiometer is characterized in that the resistance element takes the form of a single complete helical turn of resistance wire mounted on a former and engaged by the spring biased contact finger of the wiper. The circumferential edge of an insulated annular former 12 is provided with a helical groove extending over a single complete turn plus two overlapping sections, and into which a resistance wire 14 of a precious metal alloy e.g. silver/palladium alloy is wound. The outer segments of the overlapping sections of the wire V are removed so that the wiper 28 does not short across the resistance wire, and a cam shoulder 29 is provided to lift the wiper 28 clear of the gap G. The wiper is carried on a metal torsion ribbon 27 mounted on a bracket 24 attached to the block 18 by screws 25. The holes 26 for these screws are slotted to allow radial adjustment of the bracket, and to facilitate the adjustment a screw 25a is provided with an eccentric head located in a slot 26a so that rotation of the screwhead displaces the bracket radially. The block 18 is attached to the drive spindle mounted in antifriction bearings and may be rotated through a full 360 degrees. An electrical connection to the wiper is made by a light brush in the form of a resilient gold alloy wire 20 which engages with a metal collector ring 19 electrically connected through a plate and a wire to bracket 24. According to the Provisional Specification the potentiometer has a single complete turn wound about, but insulated from, a metal drum, with the ends of the wire held in contact blocks located one behind the other in the same axial plane of the potentiometer body.. The wiper arm is carried on a spindle couple to the weighing machine of which the potentiometer forms part, and is not supported in bearings in the potentiometer body.
