Abstract
939,245. High density olefinic polymers. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 9, 1959], No. 4588/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 2(6) High density solid polymers are prepared by polymerizing one or more olefinic monomers containing one or more ethylenic linkages in the presence of a modified Ziegler-type catalyst and terminating the polymerization after not more than 30 minutes. The Ziegler-type catalysts are those disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031 and 842,872, and cover the usual range. The modifiers are thiophenols, phenols, reactive organic oxygen compounds such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid esters and anhydrides, mercaptans and strong acids such as hydrochloric and sulphuric acids. Specified monomers are ethylene (preferred), propylene, butylene, amylene, cyclohexene, styrene, and their copolymers with each other or with butadiene and isoprene, as well as ethylene-ethyl vinyl ether and ethylene-2-ethylhexyl vinyl ether copolymers. The usual solvents may be present: Specifications 795,370, 841,718, 907,386 and 909,115 also are referred to.
