Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable cyclopentadiene cpd. to be polymerized in high yields at a low concentration of a catalyst without gelation at a polymn. temp. around room temp. by polymerizing cyclopentadiene cpd. in the presence of a reaction product between an oxide of tungsten or molybdenum and a Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: A cyclopentadiene cpd. is polymerized or copolymerized with an unsaturated hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) a reaction product between an oxide of tungsten or molybdenum and a Lewis acid, or a catalyst consisting of (A) the reaction product and (B) an organomethallic cpd. of metals of the Groups IWIV of the Perodic Table. A preferred cyclopentadiene cpd. is cyclopentadiene. Preferred unsaturated hydrocarbons are isobutylene and styrene.
