Abstract
939,159. Loud-speakers; diaphragms. A.R. Inc. April 7, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 12453/60. Class 40 (4). In a moving coil loud-speaker for high frequency reproduction, the coil 17, to which a dome shaped diaphragm 16 is attached, is suspended in the air gap 18 of the magnet structure by elastic material adhesively secured to the coil and to the structure. Spaced notches 21 in the rim 12a of a top plate 12 are filled with pieces 22 of elastic foam material. The material may be initially uncured and adhesion is effected by heating the material to about 300 F. when it foams and adheres to the coil 17 and top plate 12; for pre-cured material a cement may be used as the adhesive. The pieces of elastic material 22 may be dispensed with (Fig. 3, not shown) and the air gap filled completely with a highly elastic material e.g. butyl rubber, or butyl rubber 27 (Fig. 4) may be used to supplement the pieces of elastic material 22. Pads 23, 24 of sound absorbent material e.g. glass wool, may fill the spaces inside the magnet structure. The diaphragm 16 may be made of two layers of cloth bonded together with their weaves at 45 degrees to one another. Dimensions of, and some results obtained with, the loud-speaker are given in the Specification.
