Abstract

1,270,032. Diaphragms; moving coil loudspeakers. NIPPON GAKKI SEIZO K.K. 9 May, 1969 [19 Nov., 1968 (2)], No. 23875/69. Addition to 1,270,033. Heading H4J. A loudspeaker includes a rigid self-supporting diaphragm 91 (Fig. 1) of foamed plastics material secured at its periphery to a speaker frame 92 to generate sound by bending motion. Soft material 97 (e.g. foamed or unfoamed rubber or rubber-like material) having a specific gravity in the range 0À10 to 1À25 is applied, the diaphragm 9 at the periphery and has sufficient mass to prevent harmonics of the resonant frequency of the diaphragm 91 from being developed in the frequency range of about 70 to 150 Hz. The soft material 97 has an inner periphery of serrated form as shown or of sinuous form, or has a tapered surface of gradually decreasing thickness towards the centre of the diaphragm. The diaphragm may be of asymmetric shape. The diaphragm is preferably of foamed polystyrene of specific gravity 0À02 to 0À20. The total weight of soft material is 20 to 200% of the total weight of the diaphragm e.g. 100%.
