Abstract

939,106. Corrugating paper; laminates and laminating. REED CORRUGATED CASES Ltd. March 30, 1961 [April 13, 1960], No. 13252/60. Classes 42 (2), 96 and 140. [Also in Group XVII] A corrugated packaging material comprises a backing sheet 1, e.g. kraft paper, adhesively secured to the crests of arcuate flutes 3 of a corrugated sheet 2 of paper formed with alternate arcuate flutes and wider, oppositely facing, flat crested flutes 4. The sheets 1, 2 are of uniform thickness and the side walls of the flutes 3, 4 are convergent towards the crests. Strips of reinforcing material, e.g. plastic film, regenerated cellulose, metal foil, may be secured to the material either transversely across the flat crests externally, or between the backing and corrugated sheets, either transversely of the flutes or along the channels formed by the flat flutes. Either the backing or corrugated sheets, or both, may be formed as a laminate incorporating a sheet of reinforcing material, e.g. a plastic film material or metal foil. The preferred width ratio between the flat flutes and the arcuate flute is 1.5 to 1, and the flat flute channels may be filled with a cushioning material, e.g. granulated cork. Two sheets of material, with differently sized flat flutes, if desired, may be joined to form a multi-wall material, Fig. 4, by securing together with adhesive the flat faces of their respective flat crested flutes. The machines (Figs. 7, 8 and 9, not shown), for forming the corrugated material and at the same time inserting or affixing the reinforcing strips, and for filling the flat flute channels with adhesive followed by cork granules are of conventional type, their corrugating rolls being shaped to the required form. In forming the laminated product, the plastic film, e.g. polyethylene, and paper sheet may be fed separately to the corrugators and fluted together.
