Abstract

<PICT:0938768/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0938768/IV(a)/2> p <PICT:0938768/IV(a)/3> Threads of triangular cross-section (Figs. 3, 4) are made by melt-spinning using a spinneret (Fig. 1) the orifices of which have the cross-sectional shape of a three-armed symmetrical figure composed of three arcuate portions which do not intersect and are convex relative to the centre of the figure (e.g. AB) and three arcuate portions which also do not intersect, are concave relative to the centre of the figure and join the adjacent ends of the first portions, the first portions where they are nearest to the centre having a radius of curvature R of 200-400m , the circumscribed circle L around the figure having a radius of 200-400m and the inscribed circle of the figure having a radius of 50-150m . Preferably R=300m , L=300m , P=90m . The adjacent ends of the first portions may be parallel to one another and lead smoothly into the second mentioned arcuate portions. Preferably the concave and convex arcuate portions are arcs of circles. Specified materials include nylon 6, nylon 66, polyethylene teraphthalate and polypropylene.
