Abstract
938,515. Latch fastenings. NATIONAL UNION ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1961 [Oct. 31, 1960], No. 34632/61. Class 44. [Also in Group XXVIII] A suction cleaner has a casing including a pair -of upper and lower casing sections 10, 12, a latch 14 having means engageable with the lower casing section for releasably holding the casing closed, the latch having an end portion for securing the latch to the upper casing section, resilient means 38 disposed at the opposite side of the casing section wall to the end portion and means 39 interconnecting the resilient means and the end portion whereby the latch is resiliently deflectable outwardly from the casing for releasing the latch. As shown, the resilient means 38 is a spring plate and the means 39 are screws. Owing to the curvature of the wall of the casing section, only the ends of the plate engage the wall and if the latch is lifted its upper end portion fulcrums on the wall, deflecting the centre of the plate closer to the wall. The latch has a depending handle portion provided with an inwardly projecting latching shoulder 46 which in the fastening position engages underneath a flange 33 on the lower section 10. Depending from the shoulder 46 is an elongated cam portion 48 which deflects the latch outwardly by engagement with the upper edge of the flange 33 when the section 12 is moved towards the section 10. The shoulder 46 and the cam portion 48 are disposed in front of an air outlet 19 in the lower section 10 and act as a deflector; a guard 51 is mounted in the lower section 10 to protect the outlet 19. An air inlet is provided in the upper section 12 above the hinge on the opposite side of the cleaner to the air outlet 19.
