In a method of making a flexible tube of the kind wherein a sleeve of flexible material, such as polyvinyl chloride, is disposed around an inner, flexible metal tube formed by helically winding metal strip and having the edges of adjacent turns interlocked so as to permit of limited relative movement between the turns, an expanded tube having a preformed, helically convoluted surface is placed over the metal tube and allowed to contract and grip the metal tube with the groove of the expanded tube disposed in the groove of the metal tube. A flexible tube is placed on a smooth mandrel and the latter is rotated while a tool having a wedge-shaped end is moved parallel to the axis of the mandrel to form a shallow helical depression in the tube, the tool or the mandrel being heated; alternatively, the mandrel has a helical groove formed therein. The tube is expanded by air or other gas pressure for insertion therein of the metal tube and then allowed to contract on to the metal tube.
