Abstract

819,546. Flexible tubes. ENGL Ltd., J. Jan. 15, 1958 [Jan. 23, 1957; Feb. 26, 1957], Nos. 2372/57 and 6348/57. Class 99(2). In a flexible tube comprising an inner flexible metal tube 4 of the kind formed by helically winding metal strip and having the edges of adjacent turns interlocked so as to permit of relative movement between the turns, and a preformed covering sleeve 1 of a flexible material, the wall of the sleeve extends into each groove in the outer surface of the tube and has the convoluted shape of the tube. As shown, a sleeve 1 of polyvinyl chloride is expanded and has inserted in one end thereof a tapered hollow plug 3 screwed into the tube 4 which is located over a hollow mandrel 5 connected to a pipe 6 through which air under pressure passes to the sleeve thereby expanding the sleeve for passage over the tube. The sleeve is allowed to contract and the assembly is placed on another mandrel and rotated so that the sleeve is heated by an infra-red heating device and caused to enter the groove in the tube by the winding of a cord or wire about the assembly. The sleeve may be of a woven fabric, and the cord may be retained in the groove. The sleeve may be extruded on to the tube. When a cord of rubber or of a plastic is used in conjunction with a sleeve of similar material, the sleeve and cord are attached to each other by the application of heat.
