Abstract

811,592. Flexible tubes. COMPOFLEX CO. Ltd. Sept. 18, 1957 [Sept. 19, 1956], No. 28702/56. Class 99(2). In a method of making a flexible tube comprising a wire reinforcing helix 1 and at least one seamless, tubular layer of flexible material, such as polyvinyl chloride, rubber or synthetic rubber, a seamless tube 2 having one end 10 sealed is located within a guide tube 5, the internal diameter of which is greater than the external diameter of the resultant flexible tube, with the open end of the tube at or adjacent one end of the guide tube. The tube 2 is expanded against the wall of the guide tube by creating a pressure differential between the inside and outside of the tube, and the helix which has been expanded axially on a mandrel 3 is passed with the latter into the tube whereupon the tube is allowed to contract on to the helix. Finally, the helix and tube are removed from the mandrel and the helix contracts axially so that the tube folds or forms convolutions between the turns of the helix. There may be wire helices or binding material wound externally of one or more covering layers. As shown in Fig. 2, the mandrel has removable end pieces 4 to which the stretched helix is attached and the guide tube 5 has an outlet 8 connected to a vacuum pump 9 by which pressure in the guide tube is reduced to expand the tube 2. In a modification, the tube 2 is located in an open-ended guide tube 5 and is sealed by a gland 10 through which passes a draw-string 17 attached to the mandrel 3 carrying the axially-expanded helix and disposed in a pressure tube 14 ; fluid pressure is admitted to the tube 14 to expand the tube 2 and to enable the mandrel to be drawn thereinto. In another modification, the outlet 8, Fig. 2, of the guide tube is provided with a valve, and a cap, connected to a source of pressure fluid, is engaged over the open end 11 of the tube. Fluid pressure is admitted to the interior of the tube 2 to expand the latter into contact with the guide tube, and the valve is closed and the cap removed, the reduced pressure created within the guide tube holding the tube 2 in an expanded condition for insertion therein of the mandrel and helix.
