Abstract

933,172. Flexible tubes. R. E. DARLING. Dec. 22, 1959 [Dec. 29, 1958], No. 43549/59. Class 99(2). A flexible tube comprises an impervious carcass 10, 14, Fig. 2, non-metallic material having helically-formed corrugations reinforced by means, such as a helical spring 12, which extend along the length of the carcass, and one or more restraining cords 22, Fig. 3, within the tube for limiting axial separation of the ends of the carcass. In making the tube, a partially-expanded, metallic, helical spring 12 is applied about a partially-cured, elastomeric tube 10 stretched over a mandrel and is secured to the tube 10 by adhesive tape or cement. A sheath 14 of fabric or elastomeric material is placed over the tube 10 and spring 12 and the assembly is transferred to a mandrel of smaller diameter. Corrugations are formed by winding nylon cord or wire between the spring convolutions and the assembly is partially cured. Electrical conductors 20 and non-elastic restraining cords 22 encased in a sheath 24 are sucked through the bore of the tube, the cords 22 being secured to the ends of the spring 12 and the sheath 24 projecting radially through the wall of the tube. End fittings 16, 18 are moulded to the ends of the tube and the assembly is finally cured. Alternatively, the conductors 20 and the cords 22 are positioned in a taut condition within the bore of the flexible tube.
