Abstract

Alkanols are prepared by reacting at elevated temperature in the vapour phase saturated aliphatic aldehydes wtih hydrogen in the presence of a supported copper catalyst and reacting the vaporised product with hydrogen in the presence of a supported nickel catalyst. Preferably the copper catalyst contains 25%-90% of copper based on the total weight of metal and support and is supported on kieselguhr. The copper catalyst may contain as modifier minor proportions of zinc, magnesium, chromium or compounds of these or a phosphate, tungstate, chromate, dichromate, molybdate, silicate or metaborate. The nickel catalyst preferably contains 25%-90% by weight of nickel and is also supported on krieselguhr. The process is preferably carried out at 130-180 DEG C. An example is given of the conversion of butyraldehyde to butanol.
