937,781. Automatic brake clearance adjusters. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES, MASCHINENUND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES.]. Feb. 11, 1960 [Feb. 11, 1959], No. 4886/60. Class 103 (1). An automatic clearance adjuster in a brake wheel cylinder 1, comprises a friction ring 8 expanded against the cylinder wall, a stop 7 associated with piston 2, and a groove 9 in the cylinder into which the ring 8 can be moved, the inner diameter of the ring then being less than the outer diameter of piston 2. Piston 2 moves rod 6 on brake application and should wear have occurred, then ring 8 is also moved; on brake release, the shoe retractor springs return rod 6 and piston 2 into cylinder 1 until stop 7 engages ring 8 to re-establish normal brake clearance. Eventually, ring 8 will be moved into groove 9, where it prevents movement of piston 2 and rod 6 except through the normal brake clearance. On further wear, the brake will become less effective due to shopping of piston 2 by ring 8, and so will indicate to the vehicle driver that the linings require renewal. In Fig. 3, not shown, the stop 7 is replaced by a stop-ring held on the piston-rod by a circlip.
